Plan for a day in Mallorca’s North

Are you thinking about something to do while staying in the North of Mallorca? We’ve been telling you a lot about places to discover in the area. We’ve introduced you to Pollensa, Alcudia’s Port and Playa de Muro so far, in addition to showing you our top three beaches in Mallorca’s North and hidden coves in the area too!

Today we’ve got a little recommendation for a full day in the norther area of the island.

Start your day at Pollensa’s port, a popular family resort that used to be a fishing village. It features a large marina where you’ll see mostly leisure boats and some traditional ‘llaüts’ too. This magical port offers lovely sea views and a mountain backdrop, adding the extra charm to your walk on its promenade.

Next stop for your day in Mallorca’s North will be Alcudia. The medieval town of Alcúdia is located on a peninsula that separates the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia, it boasts a beautiful medieval centre as well as an authentic local atmosphere which draws in tourists all year round. In this charming town you will see a perfectly restored walled city on the site of a Roman settlement with remains of ancient houses and a theatre.

For lunch, of course, you’ll stop at Ponderosa Beach. Right at Playa de Muro, our beach restaurant offers Mediterranean cuisine with a modern twist. We’re all about taking you on a fun gastronomic trip. Have a cocktail after lunch to enjoy the views and let us share the good times!

For your afternoon plan you’ll go for a dip at Cala Torta, an idyllic hidden cove in the north east. With a tricky access, you’ll enjoy a perfectly clear turquoise water and silky soft sand. 100% Mediterranean!

Palma de Mallorca: a Cosmopolitan city to discover

One thing is for sure: there’s no city like Palma. Located right in front of the sea in Mallorca’s south coast. It is the largest city of the Balearic Islands with an altitude of 13 metres above sea level. 

Shops, art galleries, museums, impressive buildings, glamorous hotels, a superb harbours and breath-taking old town make Palma an absolute it-place. 

Palma’s history 

Allegedly founded in 124 BC, Palma has a long history starting with the Romans, who were the first settlers, building on early Talayotic remains. The Moors and Byzantines followed the Romans. But it was not only 1229 that Palma was conquered by James I of Aragon, renamed Palma and becoming Mallorca’s capital city. During this period the Crown started to build the now famous and stunning La Seu Cathedral. 

In 1741 the city was separated from the government and about a hundred years later, Palma became the Balearic Island’s capital. The 19th century was very important for Palma’s economical growth. But it wasn’t until the 50’s when Palma became a popular tourist destination, starting to build the reputation it has until nowadays. 

Sightseeing in Palma

Palma is beautiful everywhere you look. If you’re visiting its centre, you will see remains of different  cultures all around. If you’re into architecture, there’s plenty to look at: the beautiful cathedral, of course, the Almudaina Palace, the unique Bellver Castle, the bohemian neighbourhood of La Lonja, modernist and Art Nouveau buildings such as Gran Hotel, Can Casasayas, Can Coll, Can Salas and more.

As the Mediterranean highlight it is, Palma, of course, offers a large amount of spectacular restaurants. Even though there are many Mediterranean and Majorcan restaurants all over the city, there are also plenty of international hot spots to try while visiting this beautiful city. Some of our favourites? Tast Club for a cool tapas dinner in Palma’s old town, Duke for a fresh and hip lunch in the neighbourhood of Santa Catalina, the ‘Mercat de l’Olivar’ for some fresh local produce tasting and ‘Dins’ by Santi Taura for Majorcan cuisine with a twist. 

Shopping in Palma

Last, but not least, shopping offers the ultimate shopping experience. From luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Tous at the ‘Paseo del Borne’, to concept stores like Rialto Living and little shops hidden all over Palma’s old town streets, shopping in Palma is a dream come true. Remember to shop local and support Majorcan producers!

If we can recommend some local shops to stop by, we would send you to ‘Monge’ for superb shoes, ‘Bazaar’ for beautiful interior design shopping, ‘Lasanta & Co’ for furniture and ‘La Pajarita’ for chocolate and other delicious treats!

And, as you can imagine, we’re specialists in the Northern area, close to Ponderosa Beach. This is the reason why today we invite you to discover an old town in the North of Mallorca.

Discover Mallorca: this is Pollensa 

Pollensa is an authentic stoned Majorcan town located in the North-West of Mallorca. To be more specific, Pollensa is tucked between two hills at the eastern end of the Tramuntana mountain range. What makes Pollensa extra special is its ancient rural feel.

Rich in history, the majority of the buildings in Pollensa were built in the 17^th and 18^th century taking you on a wonderful trip back to Medieval times. If you’re visiting Pollensa, there a couple of ‘must visits’ we would highly recommend you write down.

Pont Romà (Roman bridge) is located on the edge of the town and is one of the oldest landmarks in town. History says it was part of an aqueduct and its structure dates back to the 15^th century. The Baroque Convent of Santa Domingo (a cloister) was built between 1588 and 1616 and is famous for its four arched corridors. The town centre and its well-known ‘Plaça Major’ are definitely a must. On the main square you’ll find the 18^th century ‘Madre de Deu dels Angels’ church with a beautiful rose window. Continue to walk down the cobbled streets and find many other historic buildings until you arrive to the 365 steps that’ll take you to the Calvari church.In addition to several landmarks, Pollensa is also home to some of Mallorca’s most authentic celebrations: the Pollensa Wine Fair, ‘La Patrona’ festival with the re-enact mock battle between the Moors and the Christians, the Pollensa Classical Music Festival and more.

We’ve enjoyed 195 days of pure Mediterranean feeling. Every season we start we’re nervous about how it’s going to be, the people who’ll visit, the weather… so many things! But every time we get to this point where we’re wrapping up another successful season we just think: we’re so incredibly lucky! We’ve got a prime location (which you enjoy so much!), we definitely have the best customers (it’s so easy to become friends with you!) and most importantly, we enjoy what we do SO much.

At Ponderosa Beach we’re much more than a team. Every season is so intense, that we’re like a family. A big dysfunctional family working to get the #Ponderosaexperience out there, working to make our visitors happy and working to get Mallorca on the map of every foodie in Europe.

This is why we wanted to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU. Thank you to all of you, because we wouldn’t be celebrating another successful season if it weren’t for you. And one of the things we like to do is write our ‘Discover…’ articles. We’ve talked about hidden coves in Mallorca’s North, Playa de Muro, the top 3 beaches in Mallorca’s North and more. Discover Port de Alcúdia with Ponderosa Beach

Located on the north coast of Mallorca you’ll find the Bay of Alcudia, a coastline comprising from the Port de Alcudia, in the west, to Can Picafort.  Port de Alcudia was once just a fishing harbor, but has become one of Mallorca’s biggest resorts: there is a pedestrian promenade that runs along the coastline, an upmarket marina where fishing boats and luxury leisure yachts can be seen and a wide selection of bars, restaurants and shops all along the waterfront.

Most of the hotels, bars, restaurants and shops are open in the summer season – from April to October, as this is mainly a tourist resort. But you can always see the port, walk along its promenade and then go visit Alcudia, a few kilometers inland: a beautiful Medieval town with city walls and Roman ruins.

Without a doubt, the beach of Alcudia is the main attraction at the port: 7km of soft, golden sand and crystal clear water. Facillities are available: parasols and sun loungers can be hired. And there’s a wide range of water sports to practice too! The popular pedaloes can be found along the coastline, in addition to banana boats, parasailing and water skiing and can be hired by the hour. If you’re up to for something even more exciting, kayaking, canoeing and SUP paddle boarding are also available with various companies. Due to the wind conditions of the Northern part of the island (it’s the windiest part of Mallorca), windsurfing and kite surfing are also available in this area.

Ponderosa Beach: food, cocktails and sea views!

Located at Playa de Muro, our beach restaurant ‘Ponderosa Beach’ offers delicious paellas, rice dishes, fresh fish, superb meat and many other options to enjoy a Mediterranean lunch with spectacular sea views.

But at Ponderosa Beach it’s not only about food. We also LOVE cocktails! And as we have been able to discover during the past years, you love cocktails too! In our (and your) defence we must say, there’s nothing quite ‘holiday-ish’ than having a delicious cocktail at a white sanded beach with the Mediterranean as a backdrop. It’s easy to see how our cocktails can be so popular. But today we are here with a gift. A special present for you.

The Ponderosa Beach mojito recipe: the secret you’ve all been waiting for

Antonio, our bar tender, is the most talented cocktail mixer we know. (Yes, of course we HAD to have him being a part of our team J). He’s not only great with the basics, but is always thinking of new ways to amaze our guests with cool and new cocktails. And today is your lucky day. If you’ve always had a thing for our ‘mojito’, this is for you.

Let’s mix it up & enjoy the Ponderosa Beach Mojito

Ingredients:

6cl of Brugal white rum

3cl of ‘inverted sugar’*

Half a lime sliced into 4 slices

12 mint leaves

Crushed ice

A splash of soda

*Inverted sugar: It is a syrup that carries equal parts of sugar and water, we call it TPT

Preparation:

Cut the half lime into 4 slices and crush it with the inverted sugar, add the rum and mint leaves and then the ice. Stir it and add the soda and decorate with one of the mint leaves.

5 tips to go green 

1. Reuse, recycle, reduce. First things come first. Throwing out packaging has huge environmental consequences – not only does rubbish contribute towards landfill, but it also wastes the energy that went into making the product. By recycling you will minimize the impact. To cut down packages, you can also start refilling products that can be refilled. Say no to single use! Thinking green is not that hard.  

1. Grow your own fruits and vegetables. If you would like to go one step further on the ‘go green’ list, this is how you can make a difference. Growing your own fruit and vegetables is both, healthy and sustainable. This way you will reduce the amount of non-recyclable packaging your buy from the supermarket each week. Tip: you don’t even need to have a garden, as foods like tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries can easily be grown on a sunny windowsill during the summer. 

1. Turn it off. This is a really easy way of taking better care of the planet and there are still many many people who don’t know it. You might think that turning the TV to ‘standby’ is a good way to save energy, but even then electronics continue to draw power. The correct way of saving energy would be to turning off appliances after using the electronic device.  

1. Save water. Our fourth tip is really easy to follow, as we’re basically just saying to be more careful about water use. There are many ways to do so. For starters, you can take short showers.  

1. Borrow instead of buying. We know it sometimes seems like you ‘need’ something. And sometimes you probably do. But there are many times you actually don’t. Everything that you can borrow instead of buying will be an easy way to go greener. Quick example? Borrow from libraries instead of buying books and movies. 

There are many more things we can do go greener, but we hope these five tips can be a nice start for all of you! Let’s do this together 🙂

When helping others, our spirit rises and by doing so we hope to encourage society to be aware and to get better.  

Solidarity dessert and water at Ponderosa Beach  

When we were thinking about a way to be able to contribute to others’ wellbeing being who we are, doing what we do, we immediately knew it needed to be done through what we know best: gastronomy.   

Every year we give part of our benefits for Social Aids. And this is how we do it.  

On our menu you will find a dish, a dessert, our water and a shot marked as ‘solidarity’. Each one of these items has its own task.   

This year our ‘solidarity dessert’ is our ‘lime pie’. Every time we sell one of these desserts, we share part of the benefits. We collaborate in a humanitarian project in Ghana (Africa) helping the shelter farm-house “Country Side”. Part of the profits from the sale of our dessert are destined to the development of the cultivation and the sustainable and ecological production of Moringa by local producers. 

Moving on, we have our ‘Solidarity water’. Part of the benefits of the sale of our water also goes to a non profit. If you like the bottle, you can buy it and continue collaborating for a good cause. This year we’ve chosen to collaborate with ‘Shambala’, a local Non-profit organization which takes care and works with youngsters in difficult conditions, which live almost in poverty, and youngsters that may not be able to access to decent education.  

As we always say: if we add up many littles, we will have a big one!
